Η κεντρική ιδέα και οι στίχοι που έγιναν διαφημιστικό σλόγκαν
Έχοντας ήδη κάποια επιτυχημένα albums στο ενεργητικό τους, οι Dire Straits προσπαθούσαν όπως και η συντριπτική πλειοψηφία των συναδέλφων τους εκείνη την εποχή, να πετύχουν το πολυπόθητο συνεχές airplay στο κραταιό τότε MTV. Μία έμπνευση της στιγμής για τον ηγέτη Mark Knopfler ήταν αρκετή για τη δημιουργία ενός hit πολύ μεγαλύτερου από όσα είχαν πετύχει μέχρι εκείνη τη στιγμή.
Βρισκόταν στη Νέα Υόρκη όταν και επισκέφτηκε ένα μεγάλο κατάστημα με είδη για την κουζίνα. Πρόσεξε τον σωματώδη τύπο ο οποίος ήταν υπεύθυνος για την αποθήκη. Στην οποία υπήρχε μια μεγάλη τηλεόραση, "καρφωμένη" στο MTV. Ο υπάλληλος αυτός χρησιμοποιούσε κατά τη δουλειά του φράσεις κλισέ όπως "That ain't working", "That's the way you do it" και άλλες. Η έμπνευση δεν άργησε να έρθει για τον Knopfler, ο οποίος ζήτησε κατευθείαν χαρτί και μολύβι.
Λίγο μετά είχε τους στίχους έτοιμους. Το βασικό κιθαριστικό θέμα δεν άργησε να έρθει. Φυσικά ο Knopfler το ηχογράφησε χωρίς πένα, με την κλασική τεχνική των δαχτύλων του να δίνει για μια ακόμα φορά το παρών.
Το video με τα ιδιαίτερα (για την εποχή εκείνη φυσικά) γραφικά ήταν το πρώτο το οποίο έπαιξε στο MTV Europe, το οποίο έκανε ντεμπούτο την 1η Αυγούστου 1987, έξι χρόνια μετά τον μεγάλο αδερφό του. Ο στίχος "I want my MTV" που επαναλαμβανόμενος ακούγεται στο τραγούδι, έγινε διαφημιστικό σλόγκαν για το κανάλι, το οποίο ανάμεσα στις εκπομπές του έδειχνε γνωστούς καλλιτέχνες όπως οι Police, η Joan Jett κ.α. να το δηλώνουν εμφατικά :
