Το The Game του 1980 ήταν ένα ιδιαίτερο album για τους Queen. Ήταν η προσπάθεια τους να προσαρμόσουν τον ήχο τους ώστε να μπουν δυναμικά στη νέα δεκαετία, χωρίς φυσικά να απωλέσουν κάτι από τη συνολική προσωπικότητα τους. Είχαν κλείσει 10 χρόνια μαζί ως γκρουπ και όπως είναι λογικό, με τόσο μεγάλη επιτυχία ήταν δύσκολο να μην υπάρχουν οι κατά καιρούς τριβές. Οι μουσικές διαφορές, η κατεύθυνση των τραγουδιών, όλα αυτά που αποτελούν μήλο της έριδος για τέσσερις ισχυρές και διαφορετικές προσωπικότητες, προεξέχουσας φυσικά αυτής του Freddie Mercury. Όταν όμως άρχιζε η σύνθεση των κομματιών, η χημεία και η μαγεία ήταν για μια ακόμα φορά εκεί. Κάποια στιγμή στο studio, ο μπασίστας John Deacon βάζει τους υπόλοιπους να ακούσουν ένα riff που είχε γράψει πρόσφατα. Ο Mercury το λατρεύει και αρχίζει να δουλεύει πυρετωδώς, σε αυτό που θα γινόταν μία από τις μεγαλύτερες επιτυχίες των Queen. 

Για το Another One Bites the Dust ο John Deacon είχε επηρεαστεί από το συγκρότημα των Chic και το τραγούδι Good Times. Σε συνέντευξή του στο New Musical Express, ο μπασίστας των Chic Bernard Edwards είχε πει: 
"Λοιπόν, αυτός ο δίσκος των Queen προέκυψε επειδή ο μπασίστας τους πέρασε λίγο χρόνο κάνοντας παρέα μαζί μας στο στούντιο. Αυτό είναι ok. Αυτό που δεν είναι ok είναι το ότι Ο Τύπος άρχιζε να λέει ότι τους είχαμε aντιγράψει. Το 'Good Times' κυκλοφόρησε περισσότερο από ένα χρόνο πριν από το Another One Bites the Dust, αλλά ήταν αδιανόητο για αυτούς τους ανθρώπους ότι οι μαύροι μουσικοί θα μπορούσαν να είναι τόσο καινοτόμοι. Ήμασταν απλά κάτι χαζοί της disco που αντιγράψαμε ένα rock n roll τραγούδι"

Όσον αφορά την ερμηνεία του Mercury, ο Brian May θα θυμηθεί μιλώντας στο Mojo : "Ο Freddie τραγούδησε μέχρι να αιμορραγήσει ο λαιμός του. Του άρεσε πολύ. Ήθελε να κάνει αυτό το τραγούδι κάτι ξεχωριστό."
