Το εμβληματικό τραγούδι της παρέας του Phil Lynott στο μικροσκόπιο
Πρόκειται για έναν ροκ ύμνο που έχει συνδεθεί με τα πάντα. Από απλές παρέες, μέχρι γκρουπ οπαδών της Manchester United, καθώς διάφορες ομάδες που δρουν στο περιθώριο του νόμου, συχνά και εκτός αυτού. Ποια είναι όμως η αλήθεια πίσω από τον ύμνο των Thin Lizzy και μακράν πιο επιτυχημένο τραγούδι τους; Το "The Boys are Back in Town" ήταν το 6ο τραγούδι του ιστορικού album "Jailbreak" του 1976.
Η ηχογράφηση του τραγουδιού και η τελική επιλογή του
Κι όμως το εμβληματικό τραγούδι των Lizzy παραλίγο να μην κυκλοφορήσει ποτέ. Ήταν ο manager τους που επέμενε να το ηχογραφήσουν και μια σειρά από DJ's στην Αμερική που είδαν αμέσως το potential του τραγουδιού. Ο Chris O'Donnell άκουσε το τραγούδι (που αρχικά ήταν να μείνει εκτός δίσκου) και είπε κατευθείαν στο γκρουπ να το εντάξουν στο δίσκο. Ωστόσο, ο αρχικός τίτλος που ήταν κάτι στο στυλ "GI Joe" άλλαξε μαζί με τους στίχους και κάπως έτσι προέκυψε το The Boys are Back in Town. Για τα μέλη των Thin Lizzy, το τραγούδι ήταν ένα αξιοπρεπές track που θα συμπλήρωνε το Jailbreak album. Για τον υπόλοιπο κόσμο ήταν η αλλαγή της μοίρας του γκρουπ. Το ραδιοφωνικό airplay ξεκίνησε από την πολιτεία του Kentucky και σύντομα το τραγούδι ακουγόταν σε όλες τις ΗΠΑ. Κυκλοφόρησε ως single από την Mercury Records και ξαφνικά άλλαξαν τα πάντα. Μέχρι τότε οι Lizzy δεν το έπαιζαν καν στις συναυλίες τους.
Από τις ερμηνείες για το ποια ακριβώς ήταν αυτά τα "αγόρια" του τίτλου", επικρατέστερη είναι αυτή που αναφέρεται στην Quality Street Gang του Manchester. Εξέχον μέλον της συμμορίας αυτής, η οποία έδρασε από τα 60s μέχρι τα 80s, ήταν ο Jimmy Donnely του οποίου το ψευδώνυμο ήταν "Jimmy the Weed". Πρόκειται για τον ίδιο Jimmy the Weed που συνάντησε τον Johnny the Fox, στο τραγούδι του "Johnny the Fox" album, που κυκλοφόρησε την ίδια χρονιά με το Jailbreak.
To The Boys are Back in Town έχει διασκευαστεί από πλήθος συγκροτήματων, ενώ υπήρξε και το τραγούδι της προεκλογικής εκστρατείας του υποψηφίου Paul Ryan. Το περιοδικό Rolling Stone το τοποθετεί στη θέση 272, ανάμεσα στα 500 καλύτερα τραγούδια όλων των εποχών.
